Have You Seen it Yet?

Shortly after the CEDIA Expo in September, TPV was offered the opportunity to review the Sony VPL-VW50 1080p SXRD projector, one of the hottest products at the show. Naturally, we jumped at the chance. We don't normally post reviews from the magazine before they appear in print, but we thought this was a special case--a product so important that we wanted to share our observations and conclusions as soon as possible. You can find the review here:

www.avguide.com/news/2006/10/24/new-review-exclusive-sony-vpl-vw50-sxrd-...

As far as we know, this is the first review of the VPL-VW50 from a major consumer-electronics outlet, and we're proud to bring it to you here at AVguide.com.

We'd also like to hear your impressions of this stunning new 1080p projector at the unheard of price of only $5000, which brings a new level of performance to a much wider audience than ever before. Have you seen it yet? What do you think? Please share your observations with us--and other AVguide.com readers--in this forum. We look forward to your comments.

Happy viewing!

agree it is a great projector. Question is how "great" it is compared to the Mitsubishi HC5000 which costs USD500 less and also received great reviews:

anybody who did a side-by-side comparison?

We're about to get the Mits in for review; it's scheduled for the February issue, and I'll try to publish some "First Findings" (preliminary results) in the January issue.

Thanks for the preview of the SXRD, Scott!

I appreciate the heads-up before Xmas (now if only Santa will bring me one!)

Projector Central published a few days ago another review of the VW50.
Their ratings are quite average, as they complain about a problem of the picture being too soft, in particular compared to the Mitsubishi HC5000.

Here the review: http://www.projectorcentral.com/sony_vw50.htm

PS: keep an eye on their website as they will publish end of this week the review of two additional 1080 projectors: the Optoma and the Panasonic

I'm just about to start looking at the Mitsubishi. I've already done my review of the Optoma, which is scheduled to appear in Issue 74 (January). The image quality is first-rate, but it has no lens shift, and in a table-top orientation, it must be placed below the bottom of the screen, which makes positioning difficult.

I didn't find the Pearl to be too soft at all. I don't know why Projector Central did. I'll take a look at their review and see if I can find out.

Scott, thanks for a great review. I read your review twice and it didn't come across as a ringing endorsement? Now it was recommended but reading it - my impression that while you were positive you were not gushing? Especially the comment "for the money"
