Hi All, after reading the review of the Ortofon Rondo Red I went to my HiFI dealer with the wife for a listen, they had run out of the Rondo so I was just about to order one, the wife had a look around and seen the Pro-Ject RPM 5 with a Ortofon 2M Bronze so she called me over for a look, I have the Ortofon 2M Red on my Rega P1 and we did think sound would be the same as the 2M Bronze, I asked for a listen, and SWEET LORD what a sound - like a moving-coil. I did read the HiFi world review of 2M Black & Bronze with the RB300 arm when the 2Ms first come out and did not think the Bronze would be any good (must be the arm). The wife and I did not want to leave this setup, we payed 20% less as the combo had 30hrs on them and went home.
Now conected to the Cambridge Audio 640P phono pre-amp ( up to 50KHz) I can say the Pro-ject RPM -5 with cork mat & clamp and Ortofon 2M Bronze is "engaging" and very "revealing like a X-ray", beats and tempos are "finger-snapping" with my Lp's when tracking force is 1.5g, if you go higher you get more bass, if you go lower you get more treble this works the other way round with the 2M Red (1.8g). Ok the price is not "Chicken-Feed" but the 2M Bronze has a Fine Line Diamond and better body/motor with gold 2M on the side, I did try the red stylus (and I am very happy with the red) on the bronze body and yes the red stylus sounds a lot cleaner but not as good as the bronze, so good condition LPs i'll use the Bronze and old/worn LPs i'll use the Red. Also I note a lack of noise/hash with the RPM-5 2M Bronze ( same as my Thorens TD160 with Denon DL110).
A Sonic Breakthrough with a W.A.F. ! (for the price).
