Genesis reissues

Cemil Gandur -- Fri, 02/13/2009 - 14:11

The entire catalog has been remastered and is being reissued both on CD and on vinyl. I've read that the CDs sound fantastic. Anyone heard the LPs? or better both and can give a comparison ?

I always wonder on the vinyl remastering, if any digital mastering was used.
I feel tht if an original analog master is what was originally the source, it should be used, as well for the LP remaster.
A lot of companies like MoFi, for example, specify the analog master, but I always wonder on the more mainstream labels if it has been digitized and archived that way.
I'd like to see "AAA" on the vinyl.
I did not buy the Doors remaster box set, because they took the analog masters and put them on Pro Tools for editing and mixing. No thanks.
Analog for LP's only!

The new Genesis titles are remixes - some may find this heresy. and others (including me) find it interesting
The songs are not really mucked around with - I found percussion effects clearer in the mix, and many of the vocal effects on Gabriel's voice were much easier to hear, but it sounded like it was remixed with respect - overall it was a "cleaner" sound, and worth hearing, but I felt it lost a little something of the originals, probably more due to familiarity than anything else
I have a couple of the classic reissues (trespass, the lamb), and never found them exceptional - unlike the led zep from around the same time, which I felt were excellent - the sound on the new mixes is, IMO, far better than classic recs achieved
The remixes are limited, so get them quick, or regret at leisure

I thought Classic always used the original stereo analog masters. remixes?? Hmmm.

Classic used the original mixes. These new LPs weren't done by Classic.

Ok, I did buy the CDs of the Gabriel era and the sound was great. I bought the LPs now, but not got ruond to listening to them. My CD player conked out, so direct comparisons are out until it comes back from repair.
A lot of people are sentimentally attached to the old crap sound .. I think they benefitted a lot from the added clarity.

My first ever concert (by anybody) was Genesis doing 'The Lamb' at Newcastle City Hall in 1975 (how lucky is that?!) and I've lived with the LPs and CDs ever since those early days.  What I can say about these new remixes - CD and Vinyl - is that the ethereal other-wordlly sound of the band has been replaced by a REAL rock-band working its ass off in the studio.  They really sound like a bunch of proper musicians.
The originals, the definitive remasters from the 90s and the new versions all are great and, because you can really tell the difference between them, are all worth the investment for the diehards.
Enjoy.  I know I do.

I agree. The LPs of the first set sound fantastic. Also sounding fantastic are the SACDs of the second box.
I fail to understand why that (and the other sets) was released as dual SACD/CD discs in Europe and as CD only in the US.
