GEC and Rega

cmalak -- Mon, 08/31/2009 - 11:17

Quick question on Rega's participation in GEC (http://www.avguide.com/article/news-tas-golden-ear-club-adds-rega-participating-manufacturer). It does not look like there are any offers from Rega on GEC site as of yet. Is that still under negotiation or have they pulled out of GEC? I do not have a local Rega dealer in my area, so I was interested in seeing what offers/products were forthcoming from Rega thru GEC.

Sorry for my tardy reply.
Rega is supporting the GEC, but we're working on offers that can go through authorized dealers.

In general, we're focusing on providing our members with free promotional items, like recordings, accessories, etc. We just sent out several recordings (courtesy of Reference Recordings, XLO/Ultralink, and TAS), one of Robert Harley's books, and some other "do-dads" to GEC members who live in the U.S. We also gave out a bunch of stuff at the GEC TAS Editors' Briefing at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, including gold machined bubble levels from Clearaudio, courtesy of Clearaudio, Musical Surroundings, and TAS.  We're trying to line-up some cool free downloads for all GEC members, etc.

Jim,
You mentioned that you just sent out a "care package" of sorts to GEC members with recordings, RH's book, and some "do-dads." I am a GEC member in the US. I wasn't sure if you needed to sign up somewhere to receive this or if you are a member you automatically receive this. I haven't received ityet but it could just be in transit. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't supposed to sign up for it somewhere. Thx much.

Thx Jim for responding. I look forward to receiving the "care package." Thx

I am looking at GEC membership (honestly, because I just saw an article about the NAD 326BEE that is exclusive to GEC members), and am wondering if becoming a member would benefit a novice audiophile on a budget.  Thanks for any and all help.

Geickel,
Most of the content for GEC members has a "window of exclusivity." The article on the NAD 326BEE has not been published in TAS yet, but it will be on the site for all to see somewhere between 30 to 60 days after it appears in print. One of the advantages of GEC membership is that many reviews are available weeks and sometimes months before their publication in TAS. The same holds true for Hi-Fi+, too.

GEC members not only get to preview content well before its print publication, they also receive "freebies" (typically CDs and other promotional items) that can far exceed the cost of membership. For example, all GEC members who attended the TAS Editors' briefing at RMAF received a Clearaudio machined gold bubble level that retails for $75 alone, plus a couple of CDs from TAS and Reference Recordings, Robert Harley's book, a GEC tote bag and pin, etc. Those who did not, have been shipped a "care package" discussed above. GEC members also enjoy invitations to special events and briefings, and special retail offers from participating manufacturers. We hope to line-up a lot more freebies (typcially recordings) and special events for members as we move forward, including downloads from the GEC section of this site.

Hope this helps.
Jim
