FM Acoustics Anyone??

bvdiman -- Sat, 09/13/2008 - 12:00

Have been searching for infos in this forum on FM Acoustics but to no avail. Nor any review of it could be found in any hi-end magazines recently. Is the brand currently so outclassed by other hi-end brands that it's not worth a mention or review? I am a happy owner of an FM611 purchased 15 years ago thinking to upgrade (will keep old amp as alternate & as the standard for the new). Am considering their FM115 or FM1811, so insights from anybody (owners?) who had experiences with the said models will be helpful and as to how they compete with other brands in the market today? Also open to suggestions as to which other competing brands/models worth auditioning?

I haven't seen FM Acoustics at shows for at least ten years, either in North America or in Europe. If they're still operating, they have a very low profile.

Hi RH! Appreciate your prompt reply. Yes, very very hard to get hold of reviews of their equipments, let alone one in English. Surprisingly, hearsay, even though with little publicity they managed a strong and almost fanatical followers in Europe and around S.E. Asia. Therefore, if not from reviews, I do hope to rely on fellow members of this forum who had experiences with their newer products to kindly exchange/share their thoughts. Uuhmm.. though I really 'wish' The ABS could do a proper review of them in the near future?? It will be interesting to see how the "current best-SOTA" fare against them. Thanks..

The brand would have to be distributed in the US for TAS to publish a review. The last FM Acoustics review in memory was a phonostage that Jonathan Valin reviewed in Fi Magazine about 12 years ago. The gear is built with extraordinary precision and finish quality. I don't have any direct experience with the sound.

I do, as you noted. And it was great solid-state.

I was quite pleased with the FM Acoustics electronics I had until about 2 years ago-they were a nice step up from the Goldmund equipment they had replaced BUT their replacements- Concert Fidelity/Silicon Arts are just beyond anything I've heard.

They were showing their amps at RMAF '08 with big Accapelas

Our Dick Olsher reviewed the Concert Fidelity/Silicon Arts preamp and amp in EnjoyTheMusic in December '07 and was extremely high on both, declaring the Concert Fidelity CF-080 linestage his new reference. See www.enjoythemusic.com/superioraudio/equipment/1207/silicone_arts_zl_120_cf_080.htm for details.

Anonymous, thanks for the recommendation.
Hi Jon, thanks for the link. What a great write up by DO!
As it now currently stands, as far as pre-amplification goes, after three months of extensive auditioning since August last year, the FM 266MkII (a dealer loaner) which I brought around to compare practically bettered all others (very highly touted names) by quite a margin, and the 268 brought it down to it's knees! Thus, I'm pretty convinced and decided to invest and live with long term the FMA 268 pre. Had it for almost three months now and have never been happier with any other audio products over my last thirty or so years.
Well anyway, as for the Silicon Art amp, with only 120W on tap to 8ohm, they will unlikely be the best match for any of the Magico speakers (which I'm currently using), don't u think?

I don't know, buddy. What I do know is that before pulling the trigger on the FM Acoustics I would give the Soulution gear a listen. I'm not saying it's better because I don't that it is. I'm saying that it is the best solid-state I've heard in my home.

I have Jon, that's amongst how I came about in deciding on the FMA pre. Maybe an unfair comparison then, 710+721 combo against the costlier FMAs. However, the Soulution-Magico's importer just called again last week and ask me to come by listen to his new set-up. This time the 700s driving the newer M6 (w/carbon drivers) which I will, just trying to find time, and hopefully this round it will be a better match up. Apology if I seem rather vague in some statements nor delve into details, as both FMA and Soulution's importers here are good friends of mine, and pretty damn sure too they are following both this and your Soulution thread---err.. if you know what I mean.. I could be risking a friend or some discount there! =))  ..Anyway, again, appreciate your suggestion.

I wonder: Is FM Acoustics better because it is more expensive (due to better and more expensive parts, better matching of parts, more man hours needed for manufacturing)? Or should I ask the question this way: FM Acoustics is more expensive because it is better? I'm sorry for these silly questions*
* They might be silly but I'm very serious (Victor Budiman knows that)!

Is it true the performance of FM products cannot be improved upon by using cables and interconnects other than FM's cables?

Correction.  FM Acoustics was on display at RMAF 2008 w. YG Acoustics.  Einstein was in use w. Accapella. It sounded very good w. the YG Acoustics speakers.  Got pictures if you want them.  1st time I heard YG Acoustics so I couldn't judge much, but the sound was extremely fast & dynamic & open.  Not warm though at all.  Not sure of the model but it was the newer equipment.

Robert Harley -- Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:18

I also heard the FM Acoustics electronics driving the YG Anat Reference at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2008. The sound was extremely fast and dynamic, as dgad reports.
