My 17 year-old-son is interested in photography and would like to "graduate" to an SLR camera. He is considering the Canon EOS Rebel XS. Any thoughts on this or other recommendations?

What about the Panasonic Lumix G1? If he likes to frame with an LCD, the G1 has advantages. If he needs a huge lens selection, the Canon is a great choice.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look at those. I don't know about his need for a huge lens selection. The camera itself is quite pricey--so he won't e getting additional lenses for a while!
I would look at the Pentax D-200 as well.
It has anti-shake built into the body and a very good kit lens.
