Don't mess with the Zohan

Elliot Goldman -- Fri, 05/01/2009 - 16:27

For those of you who have not seen this film it is pee your pants funny. It is silly but it has some moments that you will sit alone in the room and just plain laugh out loud. If you have any Middle Eastern Friends you will laugh even harder.

Yuk!
Why is that piece of crap on BD while we still wait for titles like Indy, Aliens, etc??

Tell us how you really feel...:)

I liked Zohan - it was a very nice transfer, had good sound, and was about as profound as the scribblings on a men's room wall.

Frankly, I don't hold Aliens in a much more reverent light as a pice of cinematic art than I do Zohan.

Hee-hee about the "tell us how you really feel"!
I guess I will use another frame of reference with that, as you have a great point. Personal taste is personal taste.
There are so many great films out there which are begging for a HD transfer with it's pristine film-like images and HD sound, that it seems to me that so many films of lesser value seem to be getting the plants' time and resources.
The studios seem to be releasing films that are just "recent", not "decent", just to get hem out there, and the truly great ones seem to sometime get second fiddle, or ignored.
I suppose it is a money issue, as most likely "Zohan" may sell more than, say "Alien", or (fill in the blanks).
Don't get me wrong, as there are some great titles/transfers out there, for sure, with more every week.
Look what Warner did with the Cinerama "How The West Was Won". What  great disc, complete with packaging to match!
The "Zohan" film is just not my cup of tea, as I never liked Sandler, and while I could appreciate a great transfer and sounding disc, but that particular one, with Sandler and a technotronic disco track would not be one I'd ever spin. Just personal taste.
Enjoy!

Wouldn't pay to see Zohan or purchase the Blu ray. Saw parts of it on Showtime/HBO.  Some of Sandler 's stuff is okay I just wasn't into this flick but I am sure you all would be bored out of your skulls watching DVD's or downloads of the BBC's One Man and His Dog. Shame PBS doesn't show this on Saturday nights at 800pm nationwide. Maybe I donate a few million to WETA so they show it Saturday's for next five years during their next pledge week. Or I could donate shares of Fiat  which ill be worhtless in next 24mos.

Maybe in his next film Sandler can go outside his confidence zone and play a US soldier from the backwards of Kentucky or maybe in the remake of Deliverance take on the role Ned beatty made famous!  Or how's about a born again Neo nazi right wing gay Christian minister who runs a NC barbecue restaurant.

The negative energy here is just foolish. This is not great cinema, this is in the words of Leonard Plynth Garnel ( sat night live) "bad cinema" but it is funny as hell. I would not buy this movie either but sometimes you just need to laugh and this movie will make you laugh and laugh hard.
Sheep you need to chill dude, call up Sarah Palin and go shooting together!

sheepherder -- Tue, 05/05/2009 - 18:30

Elliott you need to get a fing sense of humor hoss! Greatest movie is the last 25 years was Animal House. And watch a few hours of One man and his Dog it will help you inner peace!
And Sandler would be great reprising the Ned Beatty role in Deliverance come on.
Now time for dinner a friend just delivered my care package from NYC some real rye bread and pastrami with fat on it. Dinner is served along with a Dr Brown's Black Cherry soda. And cheese cake for dessert. Bagels, cream cheese and lox in the morning. Hope he returns my Caterham Super 7.
Thank God Obama the first hasn't taken away my private jet yet here in the SSA!

You are the second person in the universe that has knowledge of a caterham Super 7a.  My old roommate had one and it was a minimalist interpretation of a car.  I am 6'2" 300 lbs and I actually think I bent the frame getting into the passenger seat!!!  sick acceleration and handling but would need to get another car for my left leg.......
If you have visited Israel or lived there or have friends who are Israeli ( I am fortunate to have many) Zohan rings like a bell.  muchen tuchen for everyone!!!
I still love the 5 disc release of Blade Runner in 1080p as my favorite BluRay piece.
Love and great California Cabs to all!!!!

sheepherder -- Thu, 05/21/2009 - 20:08

Nah dont need Cali cabs. Why pay for over priced and hyped Cali stuff? Drink and buy local wines, produce, meat and poultry.
That's what makes eating in Italy so great. There is synergy with wine and your meal all produced locally.
Some nice VA organic lamb chops, fresh VA produce and a nice VA red of your choice. Or a Va prime 28 day dry aged organic rib eye,a nice Cab Franc from down the road and local produce
The only wines I buy for cellaring these days are vintage French Champagnes. Pol Roger Winston Churchill
However i leave Cristal for rappers and folks who can't pronounce the names of other vintage Champagnes.
Wine is for drinking now not for impressing your friends and coworkers with some 98pt cab that Parker raves about. You don't need to spend $50 or more for a bottle of wine.  Spending  a $150 bucks for some Cali cult cab is stupid.

Wow, what a lot of discussion here.
My original thought was that with so many great films out there, needing to be Blu, this one is here, in all it's Zohanish.
Still my thoughts.

Very Funny Sheep its nice to see you enjoying some Jewish soul food! Hope you have some good spicy brown mustard to go with that !!!!
BTW to the last poster since when does technology have anything to do with great films, its all about the $$$$ and nothing more. If the movies you want to see on the new tech would sell and make lots of money they would be there already.
I only mentioned this film because I thought it was very funny and it would have been the same funny on a video tape but that wasn't how I saw it.

mecolwell -- Wed, 05/06/2009 - 08:59

Blu-ray provides the best images with it's 1080p/24, resolution, and it's High Resolution sound, Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio, being better than the "lossy" formats DTS and DD, so it is a platform to showcase the best films the closest to what the Director and filmakers intended.
So much time, expense and effort goes into a lot of films, and we need to see and hear them as close to the filmakers vision as we can get.
Blu-ray provides that platform, and some older films seem to get ignored or put back at the expense of getting out  the newer stuff, like Zohan.
Yes, "Zohan" would be enjoyable (to some) on a VHS tape, and would be just as funny.

I would like to see Grand Prix on Blu Ray and if it isn't already Le Mans and Animal House.   The Thomas Crown Affair( Mcqueen and Brosnan versions) on Blu Ray. Need to purchase Bullitt and Ronin on Blu Ray.
And the BBC has to start releasing One Man and His Dog on Blu Ray and the World Sheepdog Finals should be on Blu ray.
You have to good deli mustard for pastrami and hot dogs.  French's wont do.
I hit Wegman's for my NY state hot dogs. Beats Nathans and Hebrew National big time Ball Park and Oscar Meyer dont even rate. I do prefer good Scottish smoked salmon to lox
Maybe if they remake Live and Let Die Adam Sandler could play the role of sheriff.  Actually Sandler would make a great Bond villian even with the turn to grittier more realistic Bond who doesn't have gadgets.  Sandler and Chris Rock in remake of Live and Let Die w music by Wynton w/ Lebron James in the role of the guy who lost his arm to the crocs.  Megan Fox could reprise the Jane Seymour role.
