Do You Really Like SPAM That much?!?

Steven Stone -- Sat, 07/03/2010 - 08:37

This site is so completely full of SPAM on older posts that they are virtually unreadable!

Please, Site manager, DELETE all Spammers and their posts.

VERIFIED posters ONLY, please?

And just to pile on, the inverse problem is also terrible - my legitimate posts are so frequently eaten by the spam filter that I've given up participating on this site.

Tom Martin -- Fri, 07/09/2010 - 00:26

Scott: this (legit posts getting delayed or eaten) shouldn't be happening any more. We turned off the spam filters, as suggested by many, and instituted required registration. Please let us know if you have a problem posting now (since late June).

Of course there are more spammers (000's) than there are AVGuide people (1.5) so on a holiday weekend or other times when the staff is busy this new system will lose the battle against spam at least until we figure out additional answers to the spam problem.

Same here, I've posted a couple of times but the messages were blocked as spam. I wrote the site manager but got no reply. Wonder if this will get through.

John: see my reply to Scott. Please let us know if you have any trouble posting now.

I completely agree with Steve. In the last 24 hours, for example, fifty spam posts have popped up on AVguide threads (and I only get notified about threads/blogs that I started or contributed to--Lord knows how many others were actually spammed). As for the spam filter blocking legitimate posts, we had a series of these on a thread associated with my Technical Brain blog. (What was weird about this was that I could see the blocked posts but others couldn't. I had to "reprint" the blocked posts so that others could read them.)

With the old system, the filter (incorrectly as often as not) identified spam and sent a message to Kit. She would then read the message and decide if it was real. The system (which JV sees as an administrator) didn't delete the post, it held it. This led to a big delay (she is not even close to full time on AVG, and doesn't work 24/7) in many posts. So, we turned this system off, as I mention above.

Of course, the old spam filter did limit the spam. Now we more susceptible to it. We're working on additional processes to try to contain things.
