Do speakers ever wear out? I have 2 pair NHT 2.9 in my system that were built in 1999 and I was wondering if they ever just wear out. The surrounds are still good with no tears and the cones have no holes. They have been in just about daily use for almost 10 years so I was wondering. But I think they may have lost thier edge. Sometimes they are not as sharp as they once were. Now I know that as we age our hearing starts to lost some of it's detail, so it could be that. But NHT 2.9 are known for thier truthfullnes, what is on the recording is what you get so maybe I am just noting the difference on certian music.
Paper cones can dry out, surrounds can decompose, and capacitors can begin to leak. I would think, though, that speakers should still be good after nine years unless they were used in a harsh environment.
