i have a question regarding hd dvd & blu-ray vs. standard dvd.
i'm hearing all the fuss about hd dvd & blu-ray and that some of them look good and some don't here is my dilemma.
i'm an owner of a sony 9000es dvd player and it went on the blink and the warranty has expired so i cannot get it fixed sony wants to much money for the repair they say since it's an old unit the parts are more expensive. i've been debating if i should purchase a new dvd player or should i just wait to see who wins this annoying format war. i miss watching my dvd's which on the 9000es looked awesome but i have a friend that has a denon-2910 and he's telling that the video signal from the denon-2910 player is far better than the 9000es thru componet and dvi outputs.
so is there any one out there that can give me there input on this dilemma.
should i buy the denon-2910 or wait to see what happens with hd dvd & blu-ray war?
thanks, chip1
Do you have a high definition tv/display?

hey! tmartin
yes i have a hdtv since 2001 the only thing is that i only have componet video inputs no hdmi or dvi.
back then hd was only viewable thru analog componet video.
i plan on upgrading my hdtv some time next year.

Having seen HD DVD, I can't imagine that you'd be unhappy about investing in that technology. The picture is substantially better than DVD. Yes, it might die, though the format war may also end up like CD and SACD where both survive (to a degree). If the latter happens, we may see universal players, and then the format war is effectively over. My point here is that the difference between HD-DVD and DVD is far bigger than the difference between DVD players.
If you have a huge DVD library that you watch repeatedly, then maybe optimized DVD playback is key. Otherwise, if you mostly watch new movies as they are released (or back catalog items as you buy them), then HD DVD (+BD when the price falls once the laser shortage is resolved) seems like a better choice to me.
This all presupposes that the $500 price point isn't a barrier for you (a guess since you have a 9000ES).
