I've not heard either of these assertions. A properly calibrated picture is the same whether it's a CRT, LCD, plasma, or whatever. It is possible to damage a phosphor-based display (CRT or plasma) if the contrast is turned up too high, but if you adjust the contrast using any calibration disc, that should prevent any damage.
