Current Issue of Playback

Sucks. The jazz reviews are awful. Way to white! The Rock reviews who cares and are almost as bad as the jazz reviews. No blues but that is probably a good thing. Movie reviews didnt include anything I wanted to see.

HT reviews there were a few! Projection screen reviews were interesting. As was the Bob Carver interview. You all need to include more warranty info on 2nd tier products.

Sorry the current issue of Playback was just awful. Bring back TPV!

Uh, I care about the Rock reviews, and enjoyed them. Why? Interesting variety, with some bands I know, some I don't. I liked the new indications of category (like Pop or Metal).

Not sure I like the rating scheme (happy to have one, I just haven't become comfortable with this particular system).

Sheepherder: You don't care about the rock reviews and yet they are "almost as badl" as the jazz reviews. I'm sure you really came into the reviews with an open mind let alone read them.

"Way to white." Um, do you mean "way too white?" And since when did race play a role in writing reviews? Albums are chosen on merit, relevance, currency and genre mix. Sorry to break it to you, but race doesn't play a factor here.

And I love the insight you provide on why said reviews are bad.

Making sniping, vacant, and dismissive statements to get your kicks seems to be an empty pursuit, but have fun.

How do you leave Samsung out of the best and brightest LCD mix, and include such lame brands as LG? I guess you couldn't get a loaner. huh? Or, are you that out of touch with the LCD market?

Samsung does indeed make some very fine products. Several months ago we covered this 47" Samsung LCD, which was Playback recommended:

You'll find the review on page 150.

Perhaps the headline to this latest article was misleading. As David-Birch Jones points out, the intent of the article was not to do a complete survey of all the LCD TVs on the market. Rather, he wanted to get a number of high-quality 1080p LCD displays together to assess the current advantages and disadvantages of LCD vs. Plasma in this competitive size range (47"-52").

 Billiken,

Thanks for your feedback/questions.

1. Yes, we're aware of the significance of Samsung LCD offerings (as well as LCD offerings from Sharp and VIZIO).

At the time the article was in preparation we faced a logistical problem, in that our video guru David Birch-Jones had been asked to review the same Samsung set we wanted him to review for Playback, but by another publication (since they offered him the assignment slightly before we did, they had "right of way"). Given this conflict, we decided to focus on other brands for our first group of four LCD reviews, but with the thought that we would review an alternate Samsung LCD model later on. Fair enough?

2. Yes, we're in touch with the LCD market.

3. No, not all significant LCD TVs can be covered in one issue.

4. Stay tuned: We'll be doing more LCD reviews to flesh out our "Best & Brightest" LCD review series over the next several issues. Specifically, we'll have a VIZIO LCD in PB16, a Sharp LCD in PB17,  and so on.

5. One more point: maybe it's just me, but I think it's kind of harsh to damn a company of LG's stature by calling them a "lame brand." Some of LG's products are better than others, but the same could be said of most manufacturers, don't you think?

Did he mean "way to write'?
