Converting from A/C power to D/C power (batteries)

 Does any one know how to convert from A/C power to D/C power (batteries) for a small stereo system?  I assume if it's possible, D/C  would be much quieter than A/C power--plus no need for surge protection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
