In the process of researching my upcoming turntable purchase, I've noticed that both the Clearaudio Concept and the VPI Scout have received excellent reviews; both being heralded as great value-for-the dollar tables. Has anyone compared them head-to-head sonically, and if so, what did you hear? I don't think I could go far wrong with either one- I'm just soliciting some input. I'll be using my Sumiko Blue Point EVO III and my Musical Surroundings Phonomena pre, so if I decide on the Clearaudio, it will be sans cartridge.
What about the Scout 2? Better platter!
The Scout 2 looks like a great turntable, Sunday/Niagara, but I'd prefer to spend less than $2000. The Scout (VPI's "entry level" 'table) currently lists for $1800, whereas the Scout 2 lists for $2200.
What's happening?
It looks to me that for $400 you get a much better 'table. Give Harry a call, you'll find he's a straight shooter.
I have a Concept and love it. Personally, I really prefer it's sound to the Scout. It's the best under $2000 table I've experienced, bar none.
The Concept also works particularly well with wood-bodied cartridges like the Grados, Clearaudio and Benz wood-bodies.
The Concept was the best High-performance audio piece that I have ever purchased. It is exceptional in every way. It's build and finish is first rate and its a joy to use. The audio performance from the turntable is simply superb, everytime I spin vinyl i am taken up by the performance. I do recommend purchasing the package that includes the Concept MC cartridge. Remember though you need good support, that is a must for any turntable installation. What it really comes down to, is that you have to love it. Find out where your closest dealer is and schedule an audition. For the record though I love my Clearaudio Concept TT.
