Best speakers for classical music under $4000

michkhol -- Thu, 03/18/2010 - 15:58

I'm looking for speakers for my BAT VK55 modded with V-Caps. I'm looking for soundstage, imaging, dynamics, neutrality, speed -  everything that matters for listening to classical music. The $4000 cap does not mean I want speakers exactly for $4000, It's because I'm looking at Living Voice Auditorium and Focal/JMLab Elektra 1007 Be, but I will gladly settle for less if I like it. I have a subwoofer (Fathom 112) so bass-shy speakers are ok. The room volume is approximately 3600 cu. ft. (20x20x9) Any opinions?

Mich Khol:

Did you get the Living Voice Auditorium or Focal/JMLab Elektra 1007 Be? I saw the Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand for $4000 at Hi Fi Centre in Vancouver, BC. (www.hificentre.com)

It looked like a handsome speaker. Here's the spec. sheet:

I liked the way it fits into a good home. Here's the TAS review:

How's your Fantom 112? It might be able to work, should you like a solid bass response... say at 30 Hz and below.

I would recommend this speaker, for a family, should it be to your taste.

John.

Gosh, this thread is ages old and keeps going. Thank you all guys for the advice!
Tried Living Voice - too thin, Elektra - unconvincing, both are not good with BAT. Utopia (the 92dB one) was good but not in the budget. Finally Dali Helikon 800 was a good match. Not exactly $4000 but I got a discount.  These floorstanders are 4 Ohms and never drop below 3.5 - easy load. Measured the room with Earthworks M30 and discovered a huge dip (about 9dB) at 100Hz. Equalized it digitally and sold my Fathom 112, the response curve was good enough without it.
