I've done my share of eBay purchases of vintage Amperex, Siemens and "RCA" tubes from the 60's and 70's, and some Soviet tubes from the 80's, which fit the 6DJ8/ECC88/6922 specifications -- some very good tubes were made back then. I'm wondering if anyone can offer an informed opinion about what the best current production tubes are in that family of tubes.
I've found that generalizing about tubes is not a good idea. Given that storage and handling can have a major effect on tube performance, one example from a particular source can perform very differently than that same brand from another source.
Also different components can mate better with different manufacturer's tubes. Just because one brand works best in a particular component doesn't mean it's universally better.
I think that anyone who uses tubes really needs to have a good tube tester and develop their own battery of tests to evaluate tubes.
