The new Shures have been out for a while, CM says good things about the new Denons, and Bose it taking a crack at this market. What are the best earphones?
So, I bought the Shure SE210s, and I really like them. More comfortable that the Etymotics, with a more robust bass and very lovely if slightly romatantic high end. Also, very easy for my iPhone to drive.
Those are headphones. And I have a hard time imagining the Sennheiser 650s at the top of anyone's list. Dark with inarticulate bass. Not up to the tradition established by earlier Sennheisers.
The Shure ES-5 and 530s are the only in-ear phones that fit my ears properly (triple flange only). I beat the crap out of my pair (sweaty work -outs three times a week and all travel duties) and they are on their second year with no ill effects (My first pair lasted three years before I lost them during a flight.)
The foam inserts never work right. If in-ear phones don't offer either flanges or a custom mold I can't use 'em.
If cost and size are no object, nothing beats Stax. Evenfor location recording the SR-30's are my first choice. At home the Lambda Pro's get the nod.
As far as conventional phones go for me its a toss-up between the Sennheiser 580/600/650 series and the top of the line Grados.

If you're looking for the best value in headphones, the Grado SR-60 and SR-80 are unbeatable. They sound terrific, are durable, and amazingly inexpensive.

Simply Sennheiser 600/650 and AKG 701. Ok, not for travel, not in ear but for listening music.
