Best cheap DVD player as CD player?

Do you remember Panasonic A100, Pioneer DVD414, JVC XV-600BK?
Which one is it now? An Oppo or a Toshiba?

I quess its the Oppo DV980HD now.
What would be the next significant step up? A Cambridge 640C?

From what I have read it seems that the OPPO series of products is extremely well thought of across the board for video performance and audio based on bang for the buck.

The Oppo HD-981 is certainly on everyone's short list.

If you also want to use the player for upsampling DVDs to 1080 you might find that a discontinued Toshiba A-35 would be a good choice. The last ones have been going for very little money.
