Hi guys,
My girlfriend wants to buy a new turntable, but it has to be something inexpensive, like $250-350. I'm looking at these models based on what I've seen in the magazines and catalogues:
Rega P1
Music Hall MMF-2.1
Pro-Ject Debut III
Any other models you guys can think of? I am a fan of Rega because their tonearms are exceptional for the money, but the P1 is also more expensive than the others. Are any of these a good choice, or is there one that really stands above the competition?
Also, she has a very old tube thing that she wants to use as a phono preamp, but I'm wondering if she should get a new phono box to go along with her new record player. That, also, would have to be something in the budget range. I'm thinking a used Rotel RQ970, but once again suggestions are appreciated.
This may not help much, but my son has really enjoyed the MMF 2.1. His system consists of:
Audio Research VSi 55 integrated amp
Magnepan MG12QR speakers
Velodyne DD-10 sub
Oppo Digital SACD
Music Hall MMF 2.1
Parasound phono preamp
Thanks Tom. That's a nice looking table- my dad really loves the Ferrari red version.
Do you have any opinions of that Parasound phono preamp?
EBF-
Just to add a note about the Parasound; this unit gets overlooked as it's been out for quite awhile and doesn't have the visual curb appeal that unfortunately holds so much sway, but it is a fantastic value. So much so that I think you have to step up to the $600 range for something like the little Phonomena or DV to have something that will clearly let more music through. One of the best kept secrets in audio. Maybe they should offer bright, shiny paint jobs with a lava lamp sticking out the top? :)
best,
Scott
Very nice indeed! The case looks to be very high quality, and it even has a detachable power cord. Very thoughtful. Rotel needs to update their phono stage.
Why not a good Technics SL1200?

Isn't that an oxymoron? :-)
