It's quite a horserace between the Pannasonic and Pioneer panels.
If you value black level higher than color accuracy, go with the Panny.
If you value color accuracy higher than black level, go with the Pioneer.
One thing I would advise is looking at the Panny 50" panels. The TH-50PHD8UK comes a la carte (you need to add connection options, stand, etc.) for $2800. That's quite a deal!
The best 42" plasma I've seen has been the Fujitsu, but that's well above $3K. Its motion tracking is superb.
