Benz LP S .....microridge vs line contact stylus

majesticgiraffe -- Sun, 08/01/2010 - 00:44

Does anyone know when Benz changed the sylus on the LP S from nude line to microridge? Can you tell on the enclosed document if you have a mr? I purchased a Benz LP S in the last 3 months and was hoping that it was indeed a microridge. The serial number is  33839. Some websites still advertise the line contact so it is confusing. The document that came with the cartridge has MR on the left edge of plotting graph but white paer inside says nude line. The musical surroundings website advertises the matrix as microridge. I ve done a google search but only on enjoythe music found the LP S introduced inAapril 2008. Somehow I was thinking that musical surroundings may have changed the splash page for Benz in June 2009 but not sure.
So if anyone could provide some info that would be great. I could call Garth but thought I would start here.

 majestic,

I'm not sure when Benz switched to a micro-ridge stylus, but I can answer the second question. Yes, you can tell from  the enclosed documentation whether you have a micro-ridge LP S. If the frequency-response chart included with your Benz has "MR" written in marker below "LP-S," as yours does, you have the microridge version.

 Jonathan,
Do you have any further information on the exact details of the Benz LP - S MG?
- I have been told that in Europe there is also NOW an LP (with the lighter weight than the S version), but with the Micro Ridge stylus. Further this version has a new suspension system.
1.  Do you know if the LP - S MG included the most recent, newer suspension.
2.  The compliance for both versions reads at 15....
My question is:
Which should I choose if I wish to use it on the heavier IKEDA 407 12 inch arm.
Would the heavier version of 16 gr be better suited for the above arm, even thought it still has a compliance of 15 suited to medium mass arms?
Your thoughts?

you can always call Garth Leerer at Musical Surroundings in Oakland who is the president and importer. He always has good info and willing to share/help.
