Hello,
I have read few recent reviews of the Benchmark DACPre and am wondering about its use as a preamplifier. In particular for driving a tube amplifier (namely as I dream of the Audio Research VS115) via the XLR/balanced outputs of the DACPre.
I am thinking of getting a very modest CD changer, such as an Onkyo or Denon, feeding the DACPre the digital/optical signal with both the CD changer and DACPre physically close to me as I sit to listen while using a long pair of XLR/balanced interconnects to the amplifier between the speakers (Usher BE-718's).
As a locating option, put everything on my audio rack from VTI between the speakers and use the DACPre's remote to adjust the volume.
Is this a foolish or low quality idea / mistake waiting to happen ?
The Benchmark should perform fine as a DAC/Preamp in a room-based two-channel system.
Don't forget to try running a USB from your computer into it as you may well eliminate the need for an outboard CD player.
I don't remember it having a remote however.
As with all preamp/amp combos the only way you can tell for sure if you like the final results is to listen. Cables and the length of the cable runs may/will affect the sound.

Before making a final decision, I would compare the sound of the Benchmark with that of good linestage. The ARC is a great amplifier, and feeding it a high-quality signal is worthwhile.
The best way is to get the Benchmark and a linestage together and A/B them.
