Ayre "MP" upgrade

-- Mon, 07/13/2009 - 14:00

I just picked up an Ayre CX7e and am considering getting the "MP" upgrade. Ayre is backed up until the end of the year with this upgrade, but they say they have performed about 400 so far on the CX7 and CX5 units. There should be at least a few people around who can report on the effect of the change from first hand knowledge.
There have been a couple of posts on other forums with some preliminary reviews of the differences/improvements, but it sounds like this mod makes a substantial difference in the overall presentation of the unit. Now I like what I am hearing currently, so I'm truly wondering if the mod is an "improvement" or a "difference", and in what way.
Thanks,
Bob

I don't have any experience with the player or the upgrade.

The latest stereophile and their site has comments on the c5 mp upgrade both from wes phillips and by atkinson comparing it to the new boulder cd player.  This  would probably be similar for the c7.  Impossible to know, of course, without listening.  Sounds like it's significant, but does not part the red sea.
Most thieving companies do not have an upgrade path, so you would be out $5K + with this type of an upgrade.   Just look at what Arc just did or what esoteric does every year or 2.  How can you go wrong by spending $250 for an upgrade in this crazy hobby?
