Audio Research reference line of products and tube rolling

cmalak -- Thu, 06/11/2009 - 14:43

I am a newbie when it comes to tube equipment. I have had the ARC Ref 3, Ref 110, and Ref CD7 for a couple of years and they are my first set of tube components. Has anyone experimented with tube rolling with any of these units and what are some of the favorite flavors of either the 6550 output tubes in the Ref 110 or the 6H30s found in the Ref 3 and CD7 relative to the stock tubes that come from Audio research? Also, are there any issues one ought to look out for if one were to experiment with tube rolling with these components? Would appreciate any input Jonathan Valin might have on this given his familiarity with the Reference line from ARC. Thanks very much for your help.

There was a time, cmalak, when all I did was roll tubes--Telefunkens, Mullards, British Amperexes, Dutch Amperexes, GEs, Sylvanias, RCAs, Genelexes, Tung-Sols, WEs, you name it I tried it. There is no question that the "right" tubes (or combination of tubes) can not only make sonic differences, they can also make sonic improvements. BUT the way I feel about the whole enterprise now is that life is too short. I'd rather make the assumption that the manufacturer has done the best job he can of selecting tubes that compliment his circuit (and that are reliable), and listen to music rather than listen to a never-ending (and, believe me, once you start down this path there is no end in sight) series of NOS second-guesses. Others on our staff feel differently. But the way I look at it nowadays is that if a particular complement of readily available tubes proves to be a better choice than the manufacturer made, then, by God, the manufacturer should've made that choice in the first place (or given the consumer the option of that choice, even if it meant more money) instead of leaving the spadework up to the end-user.

Thx Jonathan...appreciate the feedback. I have since taken that approach from the time I posted the question. I am focusing elsewhere now as I evolve my audio setup. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Ref2 and Ref5. Thx
