Audio cables for DVD Audio

JR30 -- Mon, 04/16/2007 - 17:04

I am looking to purchase a multichannel set of audio cables for my DVD Audio player. I am looking at cables from Audioquest (Copperhead), Kimber (PBJ), and Better Cables (Silver Serpent). Are there any other suggestions of cables I might find in this price point? Also does stepping up from the $40-60 pair range to the $90-100 range really bring much noticeable improvement? How much difference does the cable make versus the quality of the source and receiver/amp?

I think you will notice the most impact from changing receivers/amps. But, that will cost you more than $50.

I plan on stepping up to a new receiver (probably Marantz or Pioneer Elite) and I wanted to step up in cable quality as well. So I guess my question is that with all other variables being equal how much does an increase in cable/speaker wire quality (higher cost) contribute to potential performance of the system? How does a Kimber 8TC speaker wire or Hero interconnect improve sound over a Monster Cable strand of 14 guage or basic interconnect?

Also, now that I asking, I have always just run bare speaker wire to the binding posts so are there any sonic benefits beyond convienence for spades or banana plugs?

I do not think you will find dramatic differences between cables, provided that:

1. Your speaker wire is a) not very long and b) has adequate guage to not impact bass performance. Bare wire is fine as long as the terminals on your receiver allow you to establish a solid connection without a short (spades and bananas often make establishing a solid, short-free connection much easier)

2. Your interconnects have good connectors and adequate shielding. For your purposes I would think that basic Kimber or Audioquest cable would be fine.

Having dealt with those issues, I would focus on set up of your speakers, receiver and listening room as a primary issue.
