Any Recomendations for a good DVD-Audio player?

kuroda99 -- Tue, 11/09/2010 - 16:05

Hello fellow Audiofiles,
I still cling to physical media software (disks).  At this point in time,   I have not gone head over heals for downloaded music.   I still have a good collection CDs, SACDs, and some DVD-Audio discs,
My problemis that I am looking for a good/very good  player for my DVD-Audio discs.   I have heard the reviews of the Oppo 83SE but several have said that it sounds just OK for music.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a  very good DVD-Audio player?
 Luxman DU-50,  Esoteceric UX-1, Marantz UD-8004, ???
thanks in advance for your suggestions,

Wow! I am surprised that now when the verdict is out u still want to spend on a DVD audio player. That's like buying a highend VHS recorder or cassette deck. Unless u have hundreds of DVD audiodisks or rare stuff not available I would not spend a dime on a disk player of any kind other than the oppo. Sacd and surely DVD audio is dead. Even regular cd is dead. I would invest in a better component for the rest of my system or more music and nothing for lazers reading disks in a player while playing. I am old and even I have not played a single cd in the last 1 to 2 years. For the last 2 years disk players ar vanishing from all audioshows faster then I imagined and faster than any other product in the audio chain. But we r free to choose. I'd recommend oppo bdp83 and if u want to go crazy then the special edition. Nothing more. IMHO.

...and I am surprized at Sam's attitude that a person who HAS DVD-As wouldn't want to listen to them.  I too own lots of them--if 33 is 'lots'--and they sound as good now as they did when I bought them...which is EXCELLENT.

kuro, my Oppo 83 sounds just fine as my most-used source, but I'm no GEA, I'm just a music lover who can hear some differences among pieces of equipment.  If you want a better-soundinn player, try the Oppo '83SE.  Another affordable player is the Denon '3930.  It won't play hi-rez video discs too, but it's a fine-sounding audio player.

All of these have at-least-6-channel-analog outputs.

Thats why I said if you have them and its rare stuff....i.e. "YOU VALUE" them for whatever reason then sure invest in one while knowing its outdated technology. There is nothing wrong with those who own any thing...we make choices. The man asked for a recommendation and sorry I cant recommend a Lexicon player or another player for thousands of dollars thats gone technology. you made a good recommendation.

Jeff and Sam
Thanks for replies,
I wouldn't mind spending  up to twice as much for  a player that has better sonics  than the Oppo 83SE but that might be wishfull thinking.
By the way,  looks like I found a source for  DVD-Audio disks, but before I commit to purchasing them,  I'd like to find  a good player that I can be happy with for a long time.
Let's see if anyone else has any comments.....

thanks,   .....kuroda99

kuro, YW.  Be sure to read both TAS's and Stereophile's reviews of the Oppo '83SE; they both loved it.

Oppo is the way to go; but I'd wait for the 93; or 93SE if you have the patience. In any case their direct supply site doesnt have the 83s. Ofcourse you can always do an eBay if you want it now...

A sleeper that in my opinion never got the proper recommendation was the Integra Research RDV-1.  As a cd  and  DVD-Audio player it is an excellent unit.  It was built to very high physical and mechanical standards. A friend of mine as well as myself have owned for years and will not part with them.  They are usually available used for $1000 and under on Audiogon and Ebay.  I am not familiar with the RDV 1.1 that also played SACD's but I know when they are available they are usually alot more.

Agreed-
I, too, wanted to see the Integra Research RDV player reviewed more.

To get significantly better than the OPPO BDP-83SE, you would probably have to forgo the Blu Ray part and get a universal player such as the Sony -5400ES and then get the Modwright Ultimate truth mod. It is a wonderful sounding player, but you have have to pay about $1,200 for a new Sony and another $2K for the mod. Whether that is worth it to you depends on your budget and your system.
