Any Lightweight Direct Views?

Jim Hannon -- Sat, 11/26/2005 - 14:59

Are there any direct view displays over 32" that don't weigh a ton?

The ones that I like (e.g. Sony XBR & Panasonic Tau 34") weigh so much I afraid they'll give me a hernia. I'm told it's a function of the amount of glass in them.

Any suggestions other than going to LCD or Plasma?

Thanks
Jim

Have you considered a DLP or LCD rear projector? I think you'll find a lot to like about the picture, and the weight is very manageable. You'll easily get a bigger picture (my Panasonic 44" cost $1299)

It's true that glass is the main culprit, and there's no getting around it. If you're set on CRT direct-view, take a look at Samsung's SlimFit models, which weight about 120 pounds. The largest is only 30 inches, though, so it may not work for you. Otherwise, I agree that a DLP, LCD, or LCoS rear-projection TV might be the best alternative, as long as you have the floor space. If not, a plasma or LCD flat panel might be your only option.
