Analog v Digital Amplifiers for Turntable Question.

I have recently gotten into vinyl. I have a nice Sony stereo system with an AX301 amplifier. Someone told me that it was a digital amplifier and that I was losing sound and should switch to an analog amlifier.
Is this the general opinion of most or does it really matter?

When you say that the Sony is a "digital" amplifier, do you mean that it has a Class-D (switching) output stage, or is it truly digital in that it converts analog input signals to digital?
