Amp/Phone compatability

I have AKG-701 phones w/ Musical Fidelity X-Can v8 amp and power supply, bought because of a good review. I read the bass is weak until phones are broken in, so I crumpled up newspaper in a plastic bag the size of my head, put the phones on the bag (to make this process as realistic as possible), used my old amp (Audio Alchemy HPA v1.0 to save wear on tubes in my new amp), put CD's on repeat, and played for 250 hours while I was out. This took several weeks, but I noticed no improvement. Does anyone have this phone/amp combo and what is your opinion? Is it possible this is not the best amp for these phones/is there something better? I get better bass response with my $20 phones and Sony Walkman & Discman players. Thanks for any opinions/advice.

What constitutes good bass is a somewhat individual view. I've used AKG K701 headphones with Schiit, Stello, Blue Circle Audio, and Headroom amps and in my view, all have produced deep, punchy bass. If you prefer the sound of Sennheiser HD650s, for example, you'll probably think the K701s are bass-shy.
I don't see anything in the Musical Fidelity's specs that would indicate an incompatibility with the K701s. You're right about the lengthy break-in needed (and not just for bass). I'd give them 300-400 hours before deciding if you find them satisfying. Also try them with other amps to see if that makes an improvement. The Schiit Valhalla sounds mighty good to me for $349, and if you don't like it, you can return it for a refund. The $249 Schiit Asgard produces phenomenal bass with the K701s, but its highs are rolled off a bit.
