Amp for Revel F52

jml15 -- Sun, 05/23/2010 - 13:13

Hi Everyone,

In advance, really appreciate any advice you may have to offer.  Just purchased a pair of revel f52s to go with JL f112 sub, revel c32, and revel m22s.  Although I have a multi-chan set-up that I use for HT, my primary interest is 2 channel listening.  Right now I am using a 90 watt pc Yamaha A/V receiver to run my system, which I really want to replace with amp plus pre/pro.

I was wondering what amplfier brand and how many watts you would recommend to pair with the f52.  I'll need to be able to amplify the c32/m22s as well for HT.  Budget for the amplifier 4-5K.

Thanks,

Jon

Consider Quad .
The more power the better.

Jon:
I purchased a pair of Pass x600s to go with with my Revel speakers and have been really please with the combination.  Reno Hifi has a large selection of used Pass gear that has been inspected by Pass and includes a year warrenty.   There is a large selection of gear in your price range.  The service was great, and I will be a repeat customer.   Hope this helps.  Bob

Bryston 4B SST2...have you read HP's review of the 28B SST2?

Thanks guys!

I have read a lot about pass - all of it has been quite positive.  It would seem like the x150.5 and x250.5 used would within my range.  The bryston warantly sounds fantastic and the cost seems quite a bit lower than pass - how do they compare?  I like the dual mono design.  The 28B sst2 review was very positive.

The other options I have been considering are the Rogue m 180 and the ARC vs115.  I am not sure I want all the complications associated with tubes, but these amps would seem to have the power needed to drive revel f52s.  Seems like a number of folks have good things to say about these as well.

I think what I will probably do is get a 2 chan amp, pre amp with bypass and the use an AV receiver for my HT.  Any suggestions on that front?

Thanks,

Jon

I own a pair of Revel F50a speakers and used them with a Pass Labs X1 preamp and X150.5 power amp for about four years and found the combination to be fantastic. At the time, my set up was in an open floor plan house and even at moderate levels the amp handled the speakers easily. By the way, the X1 does have a bypass for AV set-ups. I also found that MIT S1 biwire cables matched up quite well.
Six months ago I moved into a different house and my audio room while still good size, is now more isolated.  After a bit of experimenting, I found that a Ayon Spirit II integrated tube amp running 35 watts in triode Class A could handle the Revels with even greater finesse. Probably not a good choice for your installation, but the Revels are not that difficult to drive so I don't think you should dwell on a high power rating unless you like very high SPLs.
I think you will be astounded at what your F52s sound like once you have a high quality power amp on them.
Good luck.

Thanks guys for all of the comments!  I think you are right, better amplification is going to be a huge help.  It is nice to know that you really don't need 300 wpc to drive these speakers.

One option I have been considering is going with a solid state amp with a tube pre-amp.  A few people have mentioned combining bryston amps with ARC pre's such as the l17 or l26.  Pass sounds like a nice option too.

Best,

Jon

I have heard the F52's with Emotiva XPA-1 500w monoblocks fed via a Marantz AV8003 pre-pro and a Benchmark DAC-1 - this combo sounded fabulous. The Emotiva XPA-1s are definitely one of the best bargains out there at less than $2k shipped. If you don't like them return them within 30 days and you are only out the return shipping,
