Advice Regarding 2.1 Surround Systems Desired

My existing receiver recently failed, and I need to replace it. I currently have 2 JBL speakers (unknown model) that I inherited, and a very inexpensive KLF 5.1 set that I picked up a few years ago, but, as mentioned, no receiver.
I recently moved, and do not have a lot of space for a full 5.1+ system, so I was considering purchasing a 2.1 system. Does anyone have any experience or advice in terms of which systems work the best? Or am I better of buying a higher quality receiver and using the existing speakers I have?
I want to stay within the $300-$700 price range.
Do you know the surround sound systems from Yamaha?
