Advice on Definitive Technology 7000sc

bvillegas64 -- Tue, 01/10/2006 - 23:59

Thinking of upgrading speakers. I've heard some about the Definitive Tech line. Any suggestions, good or bad, on the BP7000sc. Thanks

I have enjoyed many of their speakers. From memory of the 7001: strong bass, clean but slightly recessed mids and ok but not super clean highs. I think there is a review on AVGuide.com.

Bob,

You can download a copy of The Absolute Sound review of the BP7001sc from the avguide.com archives.

I am very familiar with the 7001s, which are much like the 7000s, and would offer several observations on them.

1. The speakers are highly dynamic and easy to drive.

2. The speakers feature built-in powered subwoofers whose output can be prodigious (as in "way over the top"). Use discretion with the subwoofer volume knob for best results.

3. The speaker is capable of quite good midrange lucidity and highly three-dimensional soundstaging, but both are dependent upon getting the speakers' position in your listening room optimized.

Tip: When in doubt, try moving the speakers out further from the wall than the Definitive manual suggests; this worked well for me. (Note: This tip comes from Definitive's President, Sandy Gross.

Tip: If you are getting too much reflected output from the back wall, try using damping materials and/or diffusors on the back wall; this worked well for me.

5. On the whole, the tweeters are probably the weakest single element in the speaker. The 7001s use aluminum dome tweeters said to measure extremely well, but my feeling is that they are not quite on a par with the rest of the speaker. Specifically, on sibilance or hard transients, the tweeters will every once in a while show traces of excess edginess or brightness.

All in all, I feel Definitive's big bipolar towers are a lot of speaker for the money.

'Hope this helps
