adding blu-ray to stereo system

-- Wed, 07/01/2009 - 15:31

I want to add a blu-ray player to my stereo system and need some guidance. My stereo system has two custom-made speakers, a Plinius 8200 integrated amp, Arcam Alpha 9 CD player, and Pro-Ject turntable. In a separate room I have a 37-in. flat screen TV connected to cable and DVD player. In a third room (office) is the computer and online system. My preference would be to add the blu-ray to the stereo since I want it for the improved sound and the video is incidental (to me). Can I just buy a blu-ray and connect it into my system? I assume I also need a TV for the blu-ray so how does that connect into the stereo system? Are those the only two components I would need to add?
Another option would be to add blu-ray to the TV, but the audio for that system is abysmal. Should I consider a home theater with the blue-ray and TV to upgrade the sound?
How does all this work and connect to the computer?
Basic questions, I'm sure, but I can't find all these answers anywhere and the local hi-end audio "expert" spent my time continually talking over my head despite my best efforts to dumb him down.
Any help will be appreciated.

The blue ray format has no problem providing audio through the analog output. I have my Sony Blu Ray 350 connected this way. It sounds great but you loose on the surround sound and effects that the Blu Ray machine can give. You could also consider to connect the TV set to your good sound system equipment and have better sound. Make sure your TV accepts HDMI or component cables  so that you can use the Blu Ray video output  which is superior to your dvd machine.  Good luck and enjoy.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand your statement "My preference would be to add the blu-ray to the stereo since I want it for the improved sound and the video is incidental (to me)."
A Blu-Ray player won't improve the sound of your two-channel system.  However, as part of a complete home theater system it will add wonderful sound to the videos you play.  Therefore, it ought to be part of an HT system build around your display.  That way you will get improved sound and video quality with that system.

I don't understand what you want a blu-ray player for if you're not going to hook it up to your TV.
