Hello guys,
The place where I live is notorious for poor and inconsistent AC power supply. I'm therefore seriously considering a power regenerator (as opposed to a power conditioner) such as the PurePower 2000.
However, a good friend of mine related to me what his dealer (a respectable and trustworthy one) said about power conditioners. The dealer cautioned that he does not recommend power conditioners in that they tend to 'castrate' the music - dynamics, soundstage etc. That's the word he used. The dealer carries Spectral, Soulution, Magico and Avalon among others. The dealer said that power conditioners will negate what Spectral and Soulution work so hard to achieve - ultra wide bandwidth, superfast circuitry and high current capability. He went on to say that while power conditioners may give blacker backgrounds and great low noisefloor, it sounds unnatural.
I'm not sure what my friend's dealer's opinion is on power regenerators (as opposed to power conditioners). Assuming that his opinion on power regenerators is the same, this leaves me in a dilemma. On the one hand, I have lousy AC power supply in my home. On the other hand, if I invest in a power regenerator, it would "castrate" the music.
Any input from anyone here? Has anyone got experience with the PurePower 2000? Thanks!
I've heard quite a few AC conditioners that do indeed restrict dynamics, but there are models out there that do not, and indeed, make a significant contribution to a system's overall performance. In my view, a good AC conditioner and power cords are essential components of a system. The conditioner and power cord allows low-level detail to emerge by lowering the background noise, results in smoother timbres, and increases dimensionality.
I recommend that you see if you can get a first-rate power conditioning system on loan from a dealer for an overnight trip to your system. I suspect that once you hear it, you won't want to take it out. At least that's been my experience over the past five years in a number of different systems.
Thanks again Robert for your prompt reply. I suppose first rate AC conditioners would be Shunyata Hydra 8, Synergystic Research Tesla Power Cell and Running Springs. I understand these are passive conditioners. I need a power regenerator that would produce a consistent 230V of current. So far only the PurePower 2000 fits the bill. Would you consider PurePower 2000 a first rate equipment?
