2-ch Music Performance: Classe SSP-800/Alpha DAC (Mr. Harley?)

jm5546 -- Tue, 01/12/2010 - 19:06

Many reviewers and owners have praised the sound quality of the Alpha DAC. Similarly, many people have indicated that the SSP-800 is well suited to serve as a dual role system hub, capable of providing audiophile quality DAC performance (for critical 2-ch music listening), and as possibly the best multi-channel HT processor on the market today.

Looking to upgrade my current music/HT sound system, I am torn between the following choices:

Option #1
Upgrade my existing Casablanca III to HDMI (use for both, 2-ch music & HT)

Option #2
Upgrade my Casablanca III to HDMI (use for HT only)
Purchase an Alpha DAC (use it for 2-ch music)

Option #3
Purchase a Class SSP-800 (use for both, 2-ch music & HT)

Option #4
Purchase a Class SSP-800 (use for HT only)
Purchase an Alpha DAC (use it for 2-ch music)

Option #5
Purchase an Anthem D2v2 (use for HT only)
Purchase an Alpha DAC (use it for 2-ch music)

My problem in deciding which option to select, is that I can not obtain any of the identified pieces of equipment for an in-home audition. As such, I am relegated to information that I can obtain from reviews and/or owners. Although I have identified several options, I have two questions that I need help with:

Q1.) If considering only it's capability as a 2-ch music DAC, how does the sound quality of the Classe SSP-800 compare with the Berkeley Alpha DAC?

Q2.) If you were in my shoes, which option would you choose? and why?

Any input you can offer, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Frank

Additional Background Information:

* Note that none of the preceding points mentioned cost. This is because I have already committed myself to the cost for any of the listed options.
* My speakers are; Revel Salons 2's, Gem 2's, and a Voice 2.
* My current amplifier is an Anthem P5 (which sounds wonderful), but I will eventually be purchasing Bryston 28B's for the main L/R channels (Salons).

I would go with Option 4. The SSP-800's DAC section is outstanding, and the Alpha DAC is absolutely world class. The Alpha DAC will also decode very high-resolution files. If you can afford both the SSP-800 and the Alpha DAC, you'll have the best of both worlds. I've been using that pair for some time and am completely satisfied with the performance.

Mr. Harley,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my inquiry (I know that you must be quite busy). I greatly appreciate your input in this matter, as you are one of the few persons I am aware of that has conducted critical listening reviews of both pieces of equipment.

In that you selected Option #4, I assume that, although the SSP-800's DAC performance is excellent, it is not at the level of the Alpha DAC. Indeed, this is precisely what I have been trying to verify.

Thank you again,

Frank

Hello Robert, I have a Bel Canto DAC3 and my Classe SSP-800 will arrive next week. In your opinion, would I get as good or better sound without the DAC3 and straight to the SSP-800 or should I use the DAC3 with the SSP-800?

Robert Harley -- Wed, 09/01/2010 - 16:53

I have not heard the DAC3 so I can't comment. I would listen to both and decide which sounds better. Incidentally, the SSP-800's lead design engineer was also the lead designer on the $20,000 Linn CD12, one of the three best CD players I've heard.

Thanks Robert. I recently sold the Bel Canto DAC3 and purchased the Berkeley Alpha Dac (will arrive in two weeks). I plan to use the Alpha Dac with my SSP-800 as my set up does not easily alllow me to hook the Dac direclty into my power amp. Wondering what your thoughts are on whether or not I'll see a significant improvement in sound using the Berkeley Alpha Dac hooked into the SSP-800 vs. simply using the SSP-800 for 2 channel (source is Squeezbox Duet).

I have to say, the Alpha Dac has not yet arrived so in the meantime I am using the SSP-800 as my 2 channel and it sounds pretty darn good. So good that it makes me wonder how much better it's going to get hooking the Alpha Dac up to the SSP. Thanks again for your help Robert.

Did you receive the Alpha DAC yet? If so, I'm interested in your observations about it in relation to the Classe.

Trout4321 -- Fri, 10/15/2010 - 12:17

Robert,
Yes I did receive the Alpha DAC and I'm running it using the HT bypass on the SSP-800. It is fantastic! I'm using a Squeezebox Duet and had to send my MIT Oracle Digital cable back to MIT to get a BNC placed on one end. In the meantime, I'm using an older digital cable (nothing noteworthy) with a BNC/RCA adapter and it still sounds great. I can't wait to hear it with my fabulous MIT digital cable in the mix. At some point I'll move to a music server but I'm very happy for now.
