Consumer Electronics Show 2007

CES 2007

Highlights from Day 4

Progress moves sideways. Not only are we seeing improvements in HDTV technology, we're also seeing major drops in HDTV pricing. Samsung introduces us to the idea of wireless HD displays so we won't have to spoil the view of our plasma on the wall with pesky wires hanging under it. And both Hitachiand Vizio offered new, high quality displays at prices your wife would understand.

And while the format war burns on, Warner joined in LG in the push for peace with the announcement of its two-sided disc, the Total HD disc, though actually it compounds the problem (Buy the HD DVD, Blu-ray, or THD disc?) rather than solves it. We'll let the studios hammer this one out.

We also witnessed the unveiling of two new projects from the high end. KEF showed its new Reference speakers, which it hopes will help them recapture the audiophile high ground. And Thiel keeps a firm grip on its hold of the high ground with its new 3.7 floorstander - according to our editor, it's the best Thiel yet.

Did we mention the Sound Lab ProStat's Ray Kimber was showing at the Venetian? You've got to hear - and see - these speakers to believe them. Large just begins to describe.
