Perspective can be a rare commodity in a world where the latest “next best thing” always seems to grab the headlines. I wrote about the Synergistic Research Tesla Cables back in Issue 171 and was impressed with the entire line, from the midpriced Accelerator, upper-mid range Precision Reference to the lofty Apex. They had a common voice, a persuasive and balanced tonality that made listening a musical and utterly non-fatiguing endeavor. Truly what this hobby should be about. I’ve lived with the Apex in and out of my reference system over the last couple of years, it’s presence often depending on the system configuration or whether I was tasked with listening to some new cables. Call me lazy, but with cables I have to admit that I lack the obsession to constantly swap wire to and fro–there can be long stretches of time where I simply factor in or take for granted whatever wiring is currently linking up my system components. The last few weeks however I’ve been consciously reacquainting myself with the Apex, treating them like fresh review samples–as if I’d never heard them before.

This is all a long way of saying that the Synergistic Tesla Apex have truly stood the test of time–if anything they sound even better today than they did when I wrote the original review. Certainly break-in could be considered part of this reason. But the truth is that I’ve heard many new cables in the last few months and the Apex have actually grown in status by comparison. On solo piano for example they have increased weight in the lower frequencies especially the upper bass region. There’s more soundboard information and inner detail along with an energy and dynamism and attack that rivals anything I’ve heard in my system. The treble also enjoys a sweetness and delicacy that I think is truly the product of hundreds of hours of additional playtime. Harmonics are more settled in with fundamentals and the timing and rhythms of music have aligned more precisely. And this was not always true. Earlier on there was a bit of treble constriction and whiteness that veiled the top octave a smidge. Not much but enough to distance it from the big boys on the block like the then Tara Omega. That artifact has disappeared. Apex has always seemed the most balanced of Synergistic cabling and that’s saying a lot for a wire company that has always embraced strict midrange values first and steered clear of phony tonal balances meant to hook the unwary novice listener. Not cheap but to these ears more of a value than ever before.

I apologize for the following, but someone has to step up to the plate and (figuratively) smack you in the head with the bat, thereby bringing you back to Planet Earth, Neil. $3600 for a 1 meter cable? Have you lost your mind, or did the Money Fairy plant a Money Tree in your backyard and you no longer have any sense of proportion? I double checked the date to see if it wasn't April 1st, but no. Please explain to me, Neil, how you can (with a straight face I assume) transform speculations into definitives such as "There’s more soundboard information and inner detail along with an energy and dynamism and attack that rivals anything I’ve heard in my system." Do you have an A-B switch so you can instantly switch between two systems identical except for the cables? If not, your statement couldn't possibly be valid, scientifically speaking. Relying on one's audio memory can be very misleading. Furthermore, your "break-in" hypothesis for a pair of cables is the biggest load of bovine scatology I've ever read in these pages. I must have missed that in my metallurgy and materials engineering class. Apparently, the copper atoms in the wire (or are they pure oxygen-free platinum, gold, or maybe some exotic man-made element manufactured inside a particle accelerator?) are magically transformed by running some low-voltage current through them over a period of time, so that "The treble also enjoys a sweetness and delicacy that I think is truly the product of hundreds of hours of additional playtime. Harmonics are more settled in with fundamentals and the timing and rhythms of music have aligned more precisely." So your ears can distinguish between fundamentals and harmonics of music on the fly, and changing cables has a discernible effect on the rhythm, Neil? Yeah, right.
You obviously don't own high end equipment costing $50k and above and have not experimented with changing cables in these systems. There are forums where thousands of people hear what Neil hears. Also, Neil is comparing the Apex at $3,600 to a Tara Labs Omega at $14,900. And compared to that the Apex is a bargin.
Apparently, $50K buys super-human, bat-like hearing, along with a not-so-healthy dose of condescending audio snobbery. I can't confirm the former, but the latter is obvious. A recent hearing test made that lofty expenditure unnecessary, which is fortunate, since I already spend most of my money on mortgage, health care, gasoline, and other frivolous items. Anyone with an open mind may want to further investigate this issue of spending huge amounts of money on various "audiophile" cables, speaker wires, and power cords, starting with this extensive site by Roger Russell, who was Director of Acoustic Research at McIntosh Lab (not Apple Macintosh) for 25 years, researching and designing McIntosh speakers: http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm. Mr. Russell weighs in with the common sense and irrefutable logic of an engineer. Fascinating and highly recommended along with Mr. Russell's other sites at http://www.roger-russell.com.
Well... I don't have money tree in my backyard but I have to thank Neil for recommending these incredible lines of cables. When your review first came out, I tried accelerator interconnects and like what I heard very much and eventually ended up replacing all my interconnects, power cords and speaker cables with the Accelerators and T3 power cords. I could not be happier. They sounded much better than my old cables and I tried a few other cables as well but kept coming back to SR.
As my system grew, just recently I got a pair of Apex interconnects to go between my DAC to my amp and wow....now I need to save up to replace my speaker cables!
Thanks for again for your review. The comment about solo piano is spot on.
Neil, it would be very interesting to hear how the Accelerator (IC) compares to the Precision Reference. Apex is a little out of reach at the moment.
Neil,
Thanks for the follow-up on this interesting equipment. Your original review in Issue 171 covered both the Tesla interconnect and Tesla speaker cables and you seemed a bit more enthusiastic about the interconnect than the speaker cables at that time. Just to be clear, are these follow-up comments just for the interconnect? If so, do you have any follow-up comments for the speaker cables? Also, are your follow-up comments based on listening to the Tesla interconnect and speaker cables together or, if not, then what speakers cables were you using?
Thanks,
Phil C.
