Rotel 15 Series: An Audiophile’s Smorgasbord

The folks at North Reading, MA, known in audiophile circles as the Rotel gang, are pretty proud of their 15 Series home theater components, which they introduced in late 2008. But now, they are even more psyched to introduce their new 15 Series 2-channel collection, which includes an integrated amp, a CD player, and stereo and power preamplifiers.

The 2x60W RA-1520 stereo integrated amplifier ($999) draws on close to 50 years design experience in presenting sound as the artist intended. Highlighted features include moving-magnet phono and additional inputs for tuner, tape, CD, and Aux.

Rotel’s CD player is no slouch either, and now that CD players have moved beyond 25 years of development, you can bet the RCD-1520 CD Player ($999) lives up to the Rotel quality standard. With its segmented power supply with toroidal transformer, power “sag” and hum emissions are virtually eliminated. And digital enthusiasts will appreciate the Wolfson DAC. The CD transport is a high-performance slot loader with the signature Rotel attention to detail.

Other 2-channel emphasis components include the RC-1580 preamp aimed at the hi-fi purist ($1,300), RC-1550 preamp ($700), RB-1582 power amp ($1,500) and RB-1552 power amp ($900).

With a price increase of over 40% I wonder what changes have been made, other than cosmetic. The RA-1520 specs are identical to those of the RA-1062. ???

I see nothing new or particularly interesting here. How about an outboard DAC for music servers, or a USB input on the pre-amp? Or for that matter, how about a stand-alone, hard-drive based server itself? How about SACD? How about refinements to the ICE-based amps? And "power supply sag" and hum eliminations as the only notable improvements? Puh-lease... if any of their products have power supply sag or audible hum, they shouldn't be released.

I have to agree...I see a massive price increase but no info asto why the 15 Series CD player costs 3 times the price of my old 1070 player.
