Calling it the “big brother” to its award-winning Reference 3.1 speaker, Anthony Gallo Acoustics is now shipping its 78-inch tall, 12 custom 4-inch subwoofer-equipped, 7 CDT II-tweeter-equipped, Reference 5 LS speakers. Whoa, break out the pocketbook.
Operations VP Bill Fried calls this speaker the culmination of 25 years of loudspeaker design and research. And now it’s available to the world. "While it's not completely omni-directional, it is the closest any line source has ever come to being omni-directional," he says. The Reference 5 LS is only 7 inches wide and 11 inches deep, so that’s a tall and lean audio-making machine. It offers the options of bi- or tri-wiring as well as bi- or tri-amping. A company press release notes that the twelve 4-inch rear-firing subwooers are "time corrected" with the front firing drivers and nearly equal the surface area of a 15-inch subwoofer, yet still offer the speed and transparency that a large single driver cannot match.
Another option for the 5 LS is the Reference SA amplifier, which with volume, phase, equalization, and crossover adjustments, allows the speaker to be positioned for optimal imaging and soundstaging. According to the company, the amp was designed to be used as the primary subwoofer amp from an LFE output, so as to integrate the 5 LS into a home theater environment without the need for an outboard subwoofer.
