NEWS: Furutech's New USB 2.0 Cable for Computer-Based Audio Systems

Will Debut GT2 USB 2.0 Cable at CEDIA

Furutech Co., Ltd., manufacturer of ultra refined analog, digital, video cable and accessories, announced the GT2 today in Tokyo. The GT2 cable features 24k gold-plated nonmangnetic connectors and silver-plated Alpha OCC conductors. Furutech suggests that the GT2 is "a beautifully engineered and built USB 2.0 cable for enthusiasts with growing music collections on their computer hard drives looking for high performance sound." The GT2 will have its US debut at the upcoming CEDIA show.

Furutech provided the following details about the GT2 USB 2.0 cable today:

Hard Disk Management
More and more people have amassed large collections of music on their computer hard disks, and there are an increasing number of USB-input DACs to serve them. If properly setup and implemented computer-based systems are capable of smooth and detailed sound, especially with high resolution recordings. But as with any system component you need quality, well-engineered and built USB cables to get there.

Furutech turned its Pure Transmission engineering talents toward creating the highest quality 2.0 USB cable possible. They begin with silver-plated α (Alpha) OCC conductors and a special-grade high-density polyethylene insulation/dielectric. As illustrated below the GT2 features three-layer shielding and specially engineered 24k gold-plated USB 2.0 connectors. As with the more highly specified GT3, the cable wrap includes damping and insulating materials keeping mechanical ringing from affecting the sound. A carefully engineered clamp improves grip and keeps both mechanical and electrical distortion at bay.

The result is much as you will hear from our higher-specification GT3 USB 3.0 cable: Clear and open highs, elegant midrange textures, powerful but in-control bass, an enhanced sense of the sheer palpability of the music you’ll enjoy. The GT2 creates real musical experience from the data stored on your computer. Furutech builds each and every cable in their line the same way; optimized engineering solutions applied to advanced materials and processes, backed by utterly meticulous build quality.

Getting data from an external drive to the computer is a 1:1 transmission. The data must reach the computer as the same value that was sent. There is no variable data rate that would cause the sound to be any less smooth or clear or any other audiophile buzzword. If that were true, then copying any file across USB 2.0 would end up corrupting it.

More smoke and mirrors for the foolish that have money burning a hole in their pocket to throw at useless stuff like this.

For every new development in audio/video, there seems exist  a "snake oil" salesman ready to pounce. Complex data transfer has been successfully done for decades now with the cables we have, built by reputable companies who's products would not be used if they didn't work. And if they didn't work we'd have nothing but corrupt data on the hundreds of thousands of hard drives we use daily, in industry and at home. Granted that the Furutech cable is beautifully made, it is hardly worth considering beyond visual esthetics..., which, by the way, I'm not paying for, and I'm an audio professional.

Digital playback cannot be degrated by your USB cables, period. The 'only' way to lose information would be if you have a cable cut in half.  It's now a huge problem on these 'audiophile' sites. We are led to believe this is an actual News story in the email body......should say Advertisement. I bet they got paid for this company's press release.
'sigh'

I can't believe these people are not prosecuted for fraud.

Yeah, it's the company that brought you the $1800 vinyl LP demagnetizer (that also dmags CDs!)

IF the data is being buffered in memory before the d/a conversion, the cable quality is not that big of an issue, but when the d/a conversion happens real time, as in most dacs, the quality of the USB cable is as important as with SPDIF cables.  Both are asyncronus protocols where the timing is derived from the data stream, and problems in transmission while still allowing the bits to arrive, will result in jitter, and the resultant bad sound that goes with it.
The big problem is that most dacs have low rent USB to SPIDIF converters that make the benefits of a high end cable moot.  IF your dac's USB port only supports 48k sample rates, i doubt if you would see the benefit of this cable.  If you have one of the few that support 96K or better, than this cable would probably be worht it.

Real time processing of data by the DAC?  Now, why would anyone buy such a design is beyond me.  Go out and buy a BUFFERED interface and then you could use the cheapest USB cable in the world and still get top notch performance from the DAC.  Why?  Because the clock being used to read the input data buffer is completely different from the clock that was used to write into it.
I can not believe the stupidity of the audio press when they start talking about synchronous vs. asynchronous IO behavior.  Lets' get serious folks, that has nothing to do with the problem.  Jitter rejection is all about decoupling the bus clock from the DAC clock and a simple RAM chip and some type of DAC driven clock fixes the problem.
Then of course you get readers who read that gooblydook from the audio writers and you end up with a market with ridiculous USB cables such as this.
What next?  A Cat 6 cable made out of cryogenically treated single crystal silver strands for connection my file servers to my playback machines?
Let's get real.   Instead of buying this cable, go out and buy a reasonably designed DAC.  And, hey, I'm using M-Audio stuff and it works quite well.  It also costs peanuts when compared with those fancy metal bodied audio toys.

Everyone needs to remember one thing, the best cable in the world is still going to be lousy if connecting lousy components.  Also remember that in general digital cables are imune to issues that plague analog cables.  Digital cables do still suffer from issues of noise, signal loss, etc.  As an example try running a USB cable a huge distance and see if it still works.  Also remember that for higher frequency digital cables, the number of connectors/adapters is often more important than the overall cable length as they introduce skew which is more important than overall length.

For digital sound quality this is the key factor: Does the DAC rely on the source clock or does it use it's own clock?  If it uses the source clock then absolutely yes the cable matters.  But if it uses it's own clock AND it reclocks the signal, then the cable should be of no consequence.  For a DAC of this nature, the stability and quality of its own clock is the primary factor.

This is such a joke.  The cheapest USB cable is just a good a the most expensive.   It makes no difference.  Remember that $15,000 DAC you just sold your children into slavery to purchase is based on the same $12 ic dac that a 100 dac uses.

Audiophool (not verified) -- Mon, 07/27/2009 - 06:00

I will buy 10 and also 10 from the Denon $500 Ethernet cable.

Why do you comment on something that isn't even out there yet, let alone something you've heard?
Everyone knows that digital audio is susceptible to timing problems. That's data AND jitter. Yeah yeah 'my jpeg's get there in one piece so any cable will do'; NOT real time digital to analogue processing. Look up jitter somewhere and at least listen to something before you comment on it. Your belief that it shouldn't make a difference isn't enough, or maybe it is if you just want to inhabit some back room for old grumblies that no one pays any attention to.
