Ever since Wadia Digital introduced its groundbreaking model 170 iTransport last year, enthusiasts have been debating which DACs and amps are best suited for use with the iTransport. At CEDIA Expo 2009, Wadia has supplied an answer in the form of its new model 151 PowerDAC mini ($1195), whose chassis is the same size and shape as that of the iTransport.
Wadia characterizes the PowerDAC mini as a 24-bit/96kHz “DAC with gain,” which provides four switch selectable digital audio inputs (one USB, one Toslink, and two S/PDIF). Power output is conservatively rated at 25 Wpc, though a Wadia source told AVguide/Playback that actual output is more like 50 Wpc.
According to Wadia’s President John Schaffer, the PowerDAC mini uses proprietary Wadia Digimaster reconstruction filters as did Wadia’s original, high-end-oriented Reference PowerDAC, and uses spline interpolation to raise digital audio data rates to 384kHz for "PCM conversion with gain." The 151 PowerDAC mini will ship by 10/31/09.
