According to a company press release, in spite of the economic recession, which has greatly suppressed business activities in the retail sector, Microsoft is planning to open retail stores “to create deeper engagement with consumers and continue to learn firsthand about what they want and how they buy.”
An Associated Press report says that the stores will sell computers installed with Microsoft software as well as other company products. There is no word on what brands of computers will be sold or what other services will be provided. Perhaps to test the waters in advance of the store openings, Microsoft placed 144 employees in electronics chain stores around the world to discuss Microsoft’s Windows operating system with shoppers.
The press release says that Microsoft has hired David Porter, formerly of DreamWorks Animation SKG and Wal-Mart, “to lead Microsoft’s efforts to create a better PC and Microsoft retail purchase experience for consumers worldwide.” Porter will be responsible for defining the project’s time frame and planning locations and specifics for the retail stores.
