LG Develops Sunlit LCD for Notebooks

According to a TWICE (This Week in Consumer Electronics) report, LG has developed an LCD panel for notebooks that can be illuminated by sunlight when used outdoors. LG will display the technology at this year’s CES.

The report continues by saying that when using sunlight mode outdoors, according to LG the 14.1” display has a contrast ratio of about 9:1, compared to about 2:1 or 3:1 of conventional displays.

The report says that with the touch of a button users are able to switch the panel from standard backlight mode to sunlight mode with “backlight data signal switching technology.” Though details are scant, the TWICE report indicates that in sunlight mode the display uses reflection plates in the existing backlight panels to reflect images to the viewer.

The report adds that the display consumes about one-fourth of the energy in sunlight mode as it does in backlight mode.
