Denon Adds Two New Blu-ray Players to Its Lineup

Aiming to pass along high-definition benefits in a more affordable player to its customers, according to a company release, Denon will market two new Profile 2.0 Blu-ray players in 2009, the DBP-2010CI ($700) and the DBP-1610CI ($500). Both players will ship in July.

Both of these players are designed for integrated home entertainment systems and include BD Live and Bonus View functionality via the Internet. Both also have an onboard Ethernet port, allowing easy upgrade accessibility. They also provide DIVXHD playback and support AVCHD playback from BD discs made with HD camcorders.

Custom installers will appreciate some of the built-in features to make their jobs easier. Both models include ABT (Anchor Bay Technologies) VRS processing and upconversion and up scaling up to 1080p/24. Both players will output an HD audio bit-stream to receivers connected via HDMI. This signal can then be decoded into Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS HD Master Audio.

The information is wrong. The lower model does not have the ABT processor.

I specifically bought the Denon DVD player I have now because it has 8MB of buffer memory that eliminates layer change picture freeze.  I'd like to find an under $1K Blu-ray player with either buffer memory or that otherwise eliminates layer change freeze on both DVD and Blu-ray discs.   Denon does have a Blu-ray player with buffer memory, but its $2.5K.   The increased resolution of Blu-ray is not worth it to me if it means bringing back layer change picture freeze.  Does anyone know if either of these two new players will include memory buffer...or if the layer change is so fast picture freeze is not a problem?   Denon's website does not have information yet.

I believe the BD 2.0 spec requires 1 GB of memory - needed for BD live and not sure if it is also used as a buffer, but it is there.  I just purchased the Oppo BDP-83 and there is no freeze or pause at layer changes.  It also uses the Anchor Bay VRS chip and also handles SACD and DVD-A.  And it cost less than the Denon that doesn't handle the high end audio.

My Panasonic BD30 has a DVD layer change of over a second, but my OPPO BDP-83 has a very quick layer change. My best efforts to clock it put it at around 0.10 to 0.15 seconds using a disc with a familiar layer change location, but in regular viewing I've not noticed layer changes at all.

The senior Australian reviewer Stephen Dawson tested five of the higher-priced bluray players in Sound & Image magazine April 2009. The players varied greatly in their layer-change speed for DVD replay. However for bluray he wrote "playback of dual-layer bluray discs appears to be buffered by all players". I think he was referring to *all* players, not just the five under test.
