Canton Revamps GLE Loudspeaker Series

According to a press release from popular loudspeaker manufacturer Canton, the company has revamped its GLE series of loudspeakers and endowed the line with much of its proven high-end technology.

The release continues by saying that the most significant improvement to the GLE series is the refinement of the line’s soft dome tweeter. Canton employed a finer silk fabric that extends the bandwidth at the high end and is also more resistant to partial oscillations than the previous version. The driver geometry and magnet system have also been tweaked based on lessons learned in research and development for the company’s higher-end Vento, Reference, Karat, and Ergo speaker lines.

In addition, notes the release, the mid-bass and bass drivers are now made of the same aluminum cone material used in the company’s more expensive product lines. The drivers are said to have improved power handling capabilities, higher sensitivity, and improved accuracy.

Externally, Canton has altered the front panel of the speakers based on the results of computer modeling and extensive testing, employing a gently curved front baffle that improves frequency response linearity and increases bandwidth.

Paul Madsen, president of Canton USA says in the release that “This is a watershed year for the GLE lineup. The revised driver and motor systems, as well as the changes in the enclosure design, have really taken the performance of the line to a very refined level. We’ve simply never offered so much of our high end technology at such low price points.”

The release continues by saying that the series comprises two floorstanding models, two compact speakers, a center channel speaker, and a low-depth on-wall speaker.

The 3-way GLE 490 ($1,400/pair) floorstander has two 8-inch woofers, a 7-inch midrange driver, and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter.

The GLE 470 ($1,100/pair) floorstander has two 7-inch woofers—one of which acts as both a bass driver and mid-bass driver (making it 2.5-way)—and a 1-inch tweeter.

The GLE 455 ($500 each) magnetically shielded LCR speaker, also a 2.5-way design, has two 6.25-inch woofers and a 1-inch tweeter.

The 2-way GLE 430 ($650/pair) compact speaker has a 7-inch mid-bass driver, a 1-inch tweeter, and features a front-ported cabinet.

The 2-way GLE 420 ($550/pair) compact speaker has 6.25-inch mid-bass driver and a 1-inch tweeter.

The GLE 410 ($529/pair) uses the same driver complement as the GLE 420 but in a sealed 3.5-inch deep cabinet, making it ideal for on-wall mounting.
