According to a company press release, German loudspeaker manufacturer Canton is introducing the Reference 5.2 DC, the Reference 7.2 DC, and the Reference 9.2 DC, all of which are smaller, less-expensive alternatives to the recently introduced Reference 3.2 DC, the company’s flagship loudspeaker.
The release says that the Reference 5.2 DC ($10,000/pair) is a three-way floorstanding speaker that uses two 7.5” woofers, a 7” midrange driver and a 1” ceramic dome tweeter. The Reference 7.2 DC ($7,000/pair), also a three-way floorstanding design, features two 7” woofers and the same midrange/high frequency driver complement as the 5.2 DC. The Reference 9.2 DC ($4,000/pair) is a two-way stand-mount speaker that uses a single 7” woofer and a 1” ceramic tweeter.
The release continues by saying that the new speakers share the high-tech pedigree of the Reference 3.2 DC and feature Canton’s new aluminum oxide ceramic dome tweeter. Aluminum oxide, which is second only to diamond in hardness, enables the new tweeter to have a smaller radius while achieving improved power handling and reduced distortion characteristics relative to its aluminum-manganese predecessor. The tweeter, which operates in conjunction with a gently flared waveguide-like mounting plate, offers treble response that extends to the 30kHz frequency range.
The release says that the bass and midrange drivers feature a TCC (Triple Curved Cone) profile, which “more closely maps to the variations in function of the cone across its face than conventional single-radius, or progressive curvature cones.” The different radii increase cone stiffness and improve linearity. Additionally, the new Reference series speakers use high quality crossover networks and Canton’s signature “DC” (displacement control) circuitry, which “limits uncontrolled driver excursions at infrasonic frequencies.”
The release adds that the line features two-chamber monocoque enclosures with curved, pressure-laminated side panels made from five layers of fiberboard panels, each of varying density. The speakers are available in a high-gloss polished cherry veneer finish or in black, silver, or white hand-rubbed, multilayer piano lacquer finishes.
